5-FU: 5-fluorouracil NMSC: nonmelanoma skin cancer SOTR: solid organ transplant recipient SCC: squamous cell carcinoma INTRODUCTION Immunosuppression associated with solid organ transplantation significantly increases the rate of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) development, in particular squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). In certain cases, the rate at which these malignancies develop can be too rapid for traditional surgical or field treatments. In these cases, chemopreventative treatments should be considered to decrease the rate of NMSC development so that the remaining can be managed by more traditional treatments. Herein, we show that capecitabine can be used as a viable chemopreventative option for these difficult cases.

Clinical Findings, Treatments and Outcomes of Transplant Recipients with Metastatic Skin Cancer

Background: Solid organ transplant recipients develop cutaneous malignancies at a higher rate and with a more aggressive clinical course when compared to the general population. Due to a lack of current information within the transplant literature, we sought to assess the clinical course, treatment and outcomes of metastatic skin cancer in solid organ transplant recipients. Methods: Medical rec...

Recurrent and metastatic squamous cell carcinoma in lung transplant recipient on voriconazole: Lessons learned.

C-SCC: cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma MMS: Mohs micrographic surgery SCCs: squamous cell carcinomas INTRODUCTION The increased incidence of aggressive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (C-SCC) is well known in the immunosuppressed, solid organ transplant population. Heart and lung transplant recipients are particularly at risk for aggressive C-SCC development given their more intensive immun...

Cyclic Photodynamic Therapy: Promising Findings for SCC in Organ Transplant Recipients

(ALA, Levulan, DUSA Pharmaceuticals) has become established as a safe and effective option for the management of AKs (see the January edition, available at PracticalDermatology.com). However, there has been increasing interest in the role of PDT to...

No association between infections, HLA type and other transplant-related factors and risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in solid organ transplant recipients.

Recipients of solid organ transplants are at a markedly increased risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We investigated potential associations between post-transplant infections, HLA type, and other transplant-related factors and risk of SCC, taking immuno-suppressive treatment into account. A population-based case-control study was conducted. All patients who developed SCC during fo...

Cancer of the head and neck region in solid organ transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND Solid organ recipients are at an increased risk of developing various malignancies. We investigated the incidence, clinical features, and outcome of patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer after organ transplantation. METHODS A retrospective analysis was undertaken of patients who underwent solid organ transplantation (kidney, liver, lung, heart) treated at our institution fro...
